SVG to PNG
Draws an SVG as a PNG. An SVG has no pixel count of its own, so the size is something you choose at conversion — the same file comes out equally sharp at one or four times its size, which is not what enlarging a small PNG afterwards gives you. What people miss most often is fonts: an SVG whose text was not converted to outlines is drawn with a different typeface when this device does not have the one it names.
How to use it
- Drop or choose SVG files. Up to 5 at a time and 20MB each.
- Set the output size. "Scale" multiplies the size the SVG states by 1, 2, 3, or 4; "Set the width" takes a width in pixels and the height follows the ratio.
- Choose the background. "Transparent" leaves the empty parts of the SVG transparent, and "Fill with a colour" paints the colour you pick under the drawing.
- Check the result size shown on the page and download the PNG. Several files can be downloaded together as a ZIP with the same settings.
Good to know
- The original size is read from the width and height of the SVG, and from its viewBox when those are missing. With neither, it is drawn at the browser default of 300 × 150, and the page says so.
- A result can be up to 8192px on a side and about 16.7 million pixels in all (4096 × 4096, for example). Some phone browsers return a blank image for a larger canvas instead of an error, so the limit is applied up front.
- Scripts inside the SVG do not run, and images or web fonts the file only links to are not loaded. Images embedded in the file itself are drawn.
- Text is drawn with the fonts installed on this device. If it has to look the same everywhere, convert the text to outlines in the program that made the SVG.
Common questions
Which scale should I use?
Match the pixel size of where the image will go. For high-density screens, two to three times the displayed size is usual. An SVG is equally sharp at any scale, so drawing it at the size you need beats enlarging a small PNG later.
The typeface in the result is different.
An SVG often names a typeface without carrying it. When this device does not have that typeface, the browser draws the text with another one. Install the font, or convert the text to outlines in the original program and save again.
Can I get a JPEG or WebP instead?
This tool produces PNG, which holds a transparent background and keeps lines and text crisp. For another format, put the PNG through the format converter.
